The Best Time to Schedule a Newborn Session

As a soon-to-be or new mom, you're already planning many things, from nursery decor to baby clothes. One important decision you'll need to make is when to schedule your newborn session. As a portrait photographer, I have photographed babies of all ages, and I can confidently say that the ideal time for a newborn session is between 5 and 14 days after birth.

Why Between 5 and 14 Days?

During this period, babies are still incredibly sleepy and snuggly. This makes them easier to pose and allows the photographer to capture those precious newborn details. Their tiny features, soft skin, and curled fingers are all characteristics that make newborn photos so special. Babies at this age still have that classic newborn look, which is something you'll want to preserve forever.

When Should I Book My Newborn Session?

It's best to book your newborn session as soon as possible. Waiting until after your baby is born may limit your options, as photographers often have limited availability during the busiest newborn seasons. Scheduling several months out or even earlier can help ensure you get the time you want.

What If My Baby Arrives Early/Late?

We understand that it's impossible to predict exactly when your baby will arrive. That's why the majority of photographers will work with you to create a tentative schedule based on your due date. After your baby is born, you can contact your photographer to solidify the details. The goal is to make the newborn session experience as stress-free as possible for you and your family.

The benefits of professional newborn photography:

  • Professional studio: Studio newborn sessions are so incredibly convenient because you do not need to worry about the weather or lighting. You can bring your baby at the time that works best for your new routine and know that the lighting will be perfect and the room will be comfortable.

  • Timeless memories: Newborn photos capture a fleeting moment in time that you'll cherish for years to come.

  • Expert posing: A professional photographer knows how to pose your baby in ways that highlight their features and create beautiful compositions.

  • High-quality images: Newborn photos are typically edited and printed in high-quality formats, ensuring that they will last for generations.

  • Stress-free experience: A professional photographer can help you relax and enjoy the experience, knowing that your baby is in safe hands.

By following these tips and scheduling your newborn session at the optimal time, you can ensure that you create beautiful and lasting memories of your new baby. Remember, the most important thing is to relax and enjoy this special time in your life.
