Jessica’s Studio Maternity Session

It is always fun to work with clients who have a specific style and look in mind. Jessica came from Passaic County, about 25 minutes away from the studio, for her light and airy maternity session. She is a high school guidance counselor with a kind and calming demeanor. She and her partner are high school sweethearts who were so excited to become first-time parents.

During our consultation call we discussed her style preferences and she told me that she loved the light and natural look for maternity. In my portfolio, she saw some studio maternity portraits with the mom wearing jeans and a bra, which she loved, but she also wanted a feminine dress. This was music to my ears; I love having fun during a maternity session and creating a few different looks that support the various feelings mom experience when waiting for their baby. Also, it’s just plain fun to do outfit changes and who doesn’t like to look gorgeous? I suggested that we do a flowy, soft dress and a more fitted dress to show off her beautiful curves. This mom loved the look of white in the studio, which worked well with my light and airy editing.

When mama came in for her planning appointment we selected the maternity dresses that she would use for the session. We knew that she wanted to do a button-down shirt maternity portrait with jeans. This is a look that I have been creating quite often recently, but each time it differs in style, either with lighting, undergarments, denim style, etc. When there is a new trend or favored style, I love to mix things up so that each client’s portraits are unique while still on trend. As far as trends go, I feel this one is modern, but it’s simplicity gives the resulting portraits a beautiful feel that will look gorgeous years from now. Mom wanted a mixture of black and white and color portraits, which is always my preference. There are some clients, however, who feel strongly one way or another, so I always make sure to ask. I can’t stress the benefits of a planning appointment enough, especially for maternity sessions where we really can plan exactly what we will create together.

Jessica did her own hair and makeup beautifully. Most of my clients opt to work with my preferred professional hair and makeup artist unless they rarely wear makeup or are very skilled themselves. This mom, however, loves makeup and was more than happy to do her own. I am very flexible when it comes to clients’ preferences; I promise that you will feel comfortable during your studio maternity session, and your portraits will feel like your own.
